Tallahassee Community College is lifting the financial load for students by committing $5.9 million in federal funding to pay off outstanding student expenses.

The money is earmarked for students enrolled at TCC from March 2020 through this fall, the college announced Wednesday.

The opportunity is being made available through a grant from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund as part of coronavirus relief from the federal government.

And, that's not all.

The college also said all current students will receive a $5 daily food credit to be used at food vendors in the Student Union. Students need to show their student ID to get the credit.

Students qualifying for the federal relief money will receive an email outlining the exact amount that they owe with a custom link to approve the use of HEERF funds for any outstanding tuition and fees, the college said.

TCC's Student Government Association President Zaria Meeks said she expects students to react with excitement at the one-time forgiveness of balances for outstanding fees and tuition.

"I think once students learn about this, they are going to be excited," said Meeks, a second-year student majoring in Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences. "They will ask, 'what line do I need to stand in; who do I need to see to get the money.' "

As of Tuesday, TCC's enrollment stood at 12,003. To qualify for the federal funding, the college must confirm a student's attendance from March 2020 to the present and the proper paperwork must be completed.

"We have provided grants to students that could be used for tuition and fees as well as other expenses related to COVID and their cost of attendance.  This is the first promotion of funds specifically for student debt," said Barbara Wills, vice president for administrative services at TCC.

"Tallahassee Community College wants to ensure that our students are successful while they are here and debt-free when they graduate," Wills said. "We know the pandemic has made it difficult for so many and are pleased to offer this assistance."

TCC also has pandemic relief money available to support current and future students with the cost of attendance or for expenses related to COVID-19 such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care and childcare. More information can be found at tcc.fl.edu/HEERF.

Universities and colleges throughout the country are using portions of federal relief funds to erase outstanding debts for students as they seek to sustain or boost enrollment and increase the percentage of students graduating with fewer costs.

In July, Florida A&M University President Larry Robinson surprised graduates of the Classes of 2020 and 2021 with news the university was providing $16 million to wide out their outstanding accounts.

The university has since said it was distributing an additional $41.5 million in tuition and fee assistance during the 2021-2022 school year.

The money comes from millions in CARES Act funding the university received from the U.S. Department of Education. A portion of the COVID-19 relief money distributed to universities is designated to help pay for students' costs.
